The Dairy
(a brief history)

Springhaven as this small area of Draycott is known, sat betwixt farmland and a former quarry

There are four properties on the site. the detached property provided stabling for the working horses that would ferry the Draycott stone, by cart, from the quarry to the station in the lower part of the village. From here it would be transported by the ‘Strawberry Special’ steam locomotive.

The Quarrymaster’s house is the three-storey dwelling as you enter Springhaven. Then there is the farmhouse and it is believed that The Dairy was built on to the farmhouse approximately 250 years ago. It would have provided dairy produce for the surrounding community.

The Dairy is built from the pinkish local Draycott stone. The same stone was also used to build the chambers at the base of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The working dairy was on the ground floor in what is now the main living area. There was a water tank and various small outbuildings to the rear where the kitchen now stands. Upstairs was an additional room, which is thought to have been accessed from within the farmhouse as well as by the external stone staircase.

As many of the original features, as possible, including the flag stone floors in the sun room and living area, were used in the renovation of the property in 2005.
